We just received the keys to our new space in the Pearl!
We will keep you updated on some of our projects for the new location, like the custom cutting table (yes, Erica is designing and building it), the decor, the custom welded dressing room frames…..the list is endless and we have plenty of work to do but are excited about our beautiful plans for the space and look forward to sharing them with you!

A while back Andrea Leoncavallo stopped in at Garnish and interviewed Erica for her wonderful blog called “She Inspires 365″ which celebrates inspirational women. Every day, for 365 days, she posted a photo of a woman that inspired her and told a short story about what was important to her. This project was a major commitment and undertaking, but she finished successfully and currently has a Kickstarter Campaign to create a book of all the women she photographed and interviewed. Additionally, she is exhibiting her photographs from the project at the Pear Gallery in Portland on Mothers Day! We are planning to stop by and support her wonderful project and we think you should too! The opening is from 12-4pm at the Pear Gallery at 338 NW 6th Ave. See you there!

We were very excited to hear about the project “52 Dresses” where Portlander Ashley Riewer has pledged to challenge her creativity by designing and making a dress for each week of the year! Not only is she incredibly ambitious to take on such a project, but we think her designs are pretty dang cute too! For each dress she makes throughout the year, she will be selling a few of them on her etsy site! We are so intrigued by her project that we wanted to meet her in person and find out more! We are guessing many of you would love the chance to meet her as well! Therefore, we are planning to host a special Garnish event in the coming weeks to showcase Ashley’s project and designs so far. Stay tuned for more detailed information, and in the meantime check out her blog to see her current dresses!

It is true we are just acclimating ourselves to winter and cozying up in our winter coats, scarves and wool skirts. It is also true that we get to look forward to spring trends and styles and at Garnish we are contemplating upcoming designs and making plans! The word coming out of New York is that floral fabrics will continue to be a strong presence in the transition out of winter and into the spring of 2012 and we want to share with you a visually remarkable fabric we found and just had to purchase: a denim with a flocked red floral pattern that is bold and striking yet feminine. Design ideas are percolating here at Garnish and we can assure you this fabric will soon be used in one of our upcoming dresses, skirts, or both. In any case, we CAN’T WAIT!

We have so many talented women who are friend and clients of Garnish. It seems like every couple days we meet new interesting and creative women who are incredibly striking and compelling. It is about time we started sharing their talents and what better way than to write about them on our Blog! To begin our series of incredible women, lets start off with a very talented and sweet woman we met just the other day. Her name is Laura Veirs and she is a local and successful folk singer/songwriter who is coming out with a new record of folk songs for children. During her visit to Garnish, we talked about the shortage of music that is both appropriate and enjoyed by both children and adults! As we start planning for the Fall collections (I know, its not even Summer yet!), we thought we would share a few trends we are expecting to see this Fall! Stripes will continue to be popular but also keep you eyes peeled for polka dots in the Fall! Other styles we expect to see include wide leg pants, pleats, winter whites, scarlet reds, florals on winter fabrics, color blocking, bold mixed prints, lace, and mod 60′s styles.
I’m sitting in the shop and I happen to look up just as a gentleman walks by with a bag that says “Dinosaur Designs” on it. I am reminded of a store that I saw in NYC about 10 years ago and I thought that may have been the name. I was absolutely in LOVE with this store as it was full of gorgeous resin jewelry… just my style. So I looked online and sure enough…

All this from a pair of tights!
We wanted to share with you the wonderfully creative things that can happen when you combine a 7 year old, an old pair of tights and mother’s sewing scissors. When Faye asked if she could cut up a pair of her tights, mom (Garnish Seamstress, Shannon) originally said no (in a firm and exasperated voice) but on second thought decided why not and handed the sewing scissors to her daughter who proceeded in 15 minutes to create leg warmers, bike shorts, fingerless gloves and a headband for herself. Practically an entire outfit! Mom was unexpectedly proud of her resourceful and artistic daughter. But you know who was most proud? The 7 year old (and yes, she wears the outfit under her clothes to school and to sleep at night, just in case you were wondering).
